Back again!

Following a long absence of not posting anything on here, regretfully, I will try my hardest not to mention any promises regarding updating more often, lest it predictably backfire on me months later.

I’ve grown a distaste for Facebook nowadays, with its condensing-down of social interactions to several lines, even less; not to mention growing concerns over its sharing of personal information and disregard for privacy. I miss the days where I would share my thoughts and goings-on through blogging and also connect to friends using the same service. But since Facebook is the norm, it’s the best way to keep in contact – for now, anyway.

I still have a lot to organise for my year abroad. Accommodation is a top priority, although the choices are limited – with the majority of Mietwohnungen I would have to travel in to the school by a 30-minute bus. That’s quite a long time to travel. I’m just hoping the school will reply back and help me, perhaps even providing temporary accommodation. Another issue is my Erasmus grant, but by the sounds of it other people haven’t got any email correspondence about it either, leaving me to think that the university themselves are organising it. At least, that’s what I hope.

I’m hoping this blog entry is longer than my last one!

Uni Times

So we eventually didn’t go on that Madrid trip. Our flight wasn’t cancelled either, meaning we each lost about £60. Take that on board with losing £40 on a last-ditch train journey to get to the airport on time, after days of thinking it would never run anyway. But at least we tried?

I have at least been getting on with some university work, and also spending time chilling with my honey bunny. The weather hasn’t been too bad, luckily. I went to a barbeque last Sunday which was fun. I’m currently vegetarian again, even following lent. I’m finding it healthier, cheaper as well. However, I still miss favourite snacks such as bacon sandwiches and pepperoni pizza. It’s a habit that’s hard to get rid of!

Apologies for the short post. My next one will be longer.

Just a quick one…

So, very ironically after saying I wasn’t looking forward to the Madrid trip as I felt it would get in the way of work, volcanic ash may well be stopping us flying over there anyway. All flights have been grounded, and the postpone-till date is being moved day after day. Not a great time for traveling! My Dad was in Germany last week, and had to go on a long trek to get a ferry from Dunkirk. If we don’t get a flight to Madrid, I think we’ll just go off for a few days in merry old England instead.

Other than that I haven’t been doing much. I got almost 500 words done of one essay, 0 for the other, but seeing as I may have a lot more spare time than I thought I could easily get them both done now.

Uni Work, Music, Travel

So I’ve been (slowly) getting on with university work. Got 3 pieces done so far (although they’ll obviously need checking over before hand-in), am attempting to write an exposé for my German speaking exam in May, about the R.A.F. and terrorism. I’ve never written one before and it’s a pretty hard topic as it is, furthermore, I have no idea how I will make it last 20 minutes. The first 5 minutes will be easier, as it’s just me talking, basically, so I can get away with scripting at least some of it. But those other 15 minutes will be questions about the topic, which I will have some control over according to the exposé, but there’s obviously no guaranteeing what questions I will get. And my German History teacher will be one of the examiners! I’m just asking for trouble with the theme I’ve chosen.

Deviating from my work (as always) I had the nostalgic urge last night to listen to my A level compositions again. I had saved them; however, the only versions I have are incomplete. Which is a real shame, considering it’s my hard, creative work that I’m missing here. So I started a (not so epic) quest to track down my old music teacher and consequently obtain my full, completed compositions (and performances as well, those are missing too). The quest became half complete when my previous German teacher found his facebook. Now here’s hoping he still has the files!

Consequently, I want to start composing again. I wanted to do this before, several times in fact, but never got round to it. I’m fairly decent at creating tunes in my head, so the best solution would be to put them down on paper – or better yet, computer. I downloaded Cubase 4, deciding it was the best software (I’d used it a few times before in A level; although Sibelius is better for notation, Cubase has better sound. The midi sounds from Sibelius always hurt my ears). However, the instruments seem to be missing for some reason! I’ll have to remedy this somehow.

So, out of what I plan to do, as far as satisfying my need to be creative AND doing what’s necessary, I have this so far:

  1. Do university work! This should be priority.
  2. Plan to create tunes using Cubase 4 after exams, perhaps using keyboard connected to PC as a midi device.
  3. Continue drawing (would like to get one or two sketches posted on here at least).
  4. Maybe read a little? (I miss reading, furthermore, as I’m planning to earn money translating, I need to brush up on my English skillz).

Madrid is creeping closer and closer. I’m starting to see it as an inconvenience to work and leisure time, which is wrong wrong wrong. I guess I’ve forgotten what it’s like to travel, explore and have fun. My last trip abroad to Santiago was mainly about attending the Summer school at the University (although each weekend we went to the beach. Not too shabby).

So here ends half of my so-called studying week. I dropped out of ScriptFrenzy unfortunately, because of time restraints, and the fact that I was 20 pages behind schedule. Both of my essays desperately need doing, and before that I need to do reading of course. So here’s to another 4 or 5 days of toil!

First!

Thank you to Jai Harrison for uploading and hosting this blog. :)

So today I spent a good 5 hours working on Spanish online evaluations (AVE Instituto Cervantes) for my course. I’m not a huge fan of using online evaluation systems and tests, since they can be easily cheated (mind you, I was able to pass one of my earlier modules in first year with a high grade simply because I kept grinding through the practice tests, though was I really learning anything?). As far as online testing goes however, AVE is one of the better ones, although the flash interface is a little awkward to use, and the videos seem outdated (though occasionally funny to watch).

Other than that, I’m setting off to Madrid in less than 10 days. An actual trip where I’m not traveling with parents or school. It’ll be an adventure. However I still need to organise what we will be doing there, and how best to save money in a city where everything (to my knowledge) will be expensive. We now have a hostel sorted luckily. We chose to book our holiday over the Madrid marathon on Sunday, hence the higher hostel prices (and the booked-out rooms!). I’m sure it’ll be interesting to watch though.

Nothing else to say. Enjoy this site-under-development!
